L-Shaped / Corner Sliding Wardrobe: A How-To Guide

September 2024

One of the best aspects of fitted sliding wardrobes is that they maximise the use of space within any given room. At My Sliding Wardrobe, we offer you the tools and flexibility to individually design the perfect wardrobe that seamlessly fits into your space, whatever size or shape it might take. If your space is around a corner, we’ve got it covered!

For rooms both large and small, a corner wardrobe (or L-shaped wardrobe) could fit snugly into an unused corner, creating adjacent storage for your clothes and accessories.

The left and right sides of an L-shaped sliding wardrobe are each effectively a single wardrobe, designed and built in tandem to form your final sliding corner wardrobe. Don’t worry if your adjacent walls are not the same length, your wardrobe is designed and built to your precise specifications.

By carefully designing the two wardrobes individually, they can be easily constructed to fit seamlessly together in the corner of your room. This method also provides you with a wealth of versatility in terms of design and function.

How To Design Your Perfect L-Shaped / Corner Wardrobe

If you’ve already tried our 3D Wardrobe Designer, you’ll have found that it doesn’t appear to give the option to create an L-shaped wardrobe. This is simply due to the fact that a corner wardrobe is formed from two normal sliding wardrobes. There’s a little more complexity to designing a wardrobe that fits smoothly around a corner as there are just a few additional things to consider to bring your L-shaped wardrobe to life.

Please follow the steps below to guide you through the process. Of course, we’re here to help 24/7, 365 days a year, so if you are unsure about anything, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our knowledgeable team.

Step 1 – Decide whether your L-shaped wardrobe will run from a wall or end panel on each side and in all cases there will be a “central corner” between both ends. Depending on your space and your personal preference, your corner sliding wardrobe will fit into one of the following four categories:

    • Wall – Central Corner – Wall
    • Wall – Central Corner – End Panel
    • End Panel – Central Corner – Wall
    • End Panel – Central Corner – End Panel

Step 2 – Measure (in mm) the floor-to-ceiling height on each side whilst following our Measurement Guide for more detail. Next, measure the distance from the back wall of the opposite side to where you would like the wardrobe on the other side to end (wall or end panel), then repeat for the opposite side whilst again following our Measurement Guide. This will give you a total width and order opening height for each side of your corner wardrobe. In order to allow sufficient access for sliding doors on either side, each total width should be at least 1600mm.

Step 3 – As each side of your L-shaped wardrobe will overlap at the corner, you’ll next need to deduct your chosen wardrobe depth on the first side from the total width on the opposite side. You will then need to deduct your chosen wardrobe depth, less 18mm (to account for the corner post),  on the second side from the total width of the first side to give an order opening width for each wardrobe set. We recommend a wardrobe depth of 600mm, however almost any depth can be achieved as shown in our depth guide and video. Please note, our team can assist with any depth calculation you need, so feel free to get in touch.

For Example: If your total width measurements from the Wall – Central Corner – Wall are 3000mm and 2000mm and your chosen wardrobe depth is 600mm, your order opening width measurements would become 2400mm (3000 – 600) and 1418mm (2000 – (600-18))

Step 4 – Use our 3D Wardrobe Designer to create two wardrobes using your order opening widths and order opening heights from Step 3. Ensure that both wardrobes are set as casing all sides and that the central corner side for both is set as Wall, with the opposite sides set as Wall or End Panel depending on your choice in Step 1. If you would like to add internals for your corner wardrobe, please do for either 1 or both sides then contact us before completing your order so that we can check that the components are all correct so they can be joined in the corner.

Now it’s time to get creative and explore the possibilities!

Even More Flexibility In Design & Function

Among the many advantages of designing your own fitted corner wardrobe is that, as it comprises two wardrobes, you have the option to add different design elements to each side. You could for example, have the doors on one side as large reflective mirrors, while using premium glass or woodwork on the other for an elegant and contemporary look. Another option could be to use different panel configurations and finish combinations to create stylish designs that contrast and complement both each other and the overall look of your space.

This flexibility extends to the functions of each side of your L-shaped corner wardrobe, where for example, you can customise your internals to have clothes rails on one side and shelving on the other. You could even have a side of custom open shelving without any sliding doors (as pictured) – just get in touch with us to discuss what you’re looking to achieve. You can be as creative as you want to realise the ideal wardrobe that is both attractive and practical.
